6-Naarad Puraan, 1-Poorv Bhaag, p 1-4

Shaunak and Soot Jee in Siddh Aashram

One should greet first Naaraayan, Nar and Saraswatee Jee, then he should read Itihaas (history) and Puraan. I greet Krishn and that Paramaatmaa whose forms are Brahmaa, Vishnu and Shiv and whose parts are Lokpaal.

Many Muni were doing Tapasyaa in Naimish Aranya area. They had controlled their Indriyaan, they took only limited food, they did not feel jealous with anyone. Among them some were doing Tap, some were doing Yagya, some were doing Gyaan Yog, and some were following Bhakti Yog. Once those Muni gathered with the desire of knowing the way of Dharm, Arth, Kaam, and Moksh. Among them were 26,000 Oordhwaretaa (observers of Brahmcharya) Muni. They had innumerable disciples. They wanted to ask Shaunak Jee that "Which are the holy places and Teerth (pilgrimage places) on Prithvi? How those people who are afflicted with three types of sorrows, can attain Mukti? Who gives the fruits of all actions?"

Shaunak Jee said - "O Maharshi, Soot Jee lives here in Siddh Aashram. He does many Yagya for Vishnu. He is the disciple of Vyaas Jee. He knows all these things very well. His name is Romharshan. He discourses on Puraan. Bhagavaan Madhusoodan appears in the form of Ved Vyaas in each Yug seeing Dharm deteriorating and divides Ved in several parts. We have heard this in Shaastra that Ved Vyaas is Naaraayan in person. The same Ved Vyaas has taught Puraan to Soot Jee. There is no other better knowledgeable in Puraan than Soot Jee. He knows Moksh Dharm as well as the means of Karm and Bhakti. He knows the fundamentals of Ved, Ved's Ang (parts), and Shaastra. All this has been written in Puraan by Vyaas Jee and Soot Jee knows all about this, so let us go to Soot Jee and ask all this from him only."

They all went to Siddh Aashram and there they saw Soot Jee doing Agnishtom Yagya to please Naaraayan. He welcomed all Muni. When all had seated then Muni asked Soot Jee affectionately - "Hey Soot Jee, We have come here as your guests, therefore you worship us with Gyaan material. We wish to know that "From whom this whole Universe is born? What is its base and form? Where does it reside and where will it go? By what means Vishnu is pleased? How people worship Him? What is the conduct of various Varn and Aashram? How a guest is worshipped, so that one's all Karm become fruitful? What is the easier way of attaining Moksh? Which fruit is attained by Bhakti, what is the form of Bhakti? Please tell us all this in detail."

Soot Jee said - "Listen, Whatever you wish to listen, I tell you. Listen to that Naarad Puraan which Sanakaadi Muni told Naarad Jee. In this Puraan Ved's all principles have been described. It pacifies all Paap (sins) and evil planets. It ends all bad dreams, is according to Dharm, and giver of all pleasures and Moksh. It describes the holy story of Naaraayan. It explains all - Dharm, Arth, Kaam and Moksh. Listen to this Puraan attentively.

If somebody reads this Puraan's one chapter, he gets the fruit of Ashwamedh Yagya; if somebody reads its two chapters, he gets the fruit of Raajsooya Yagya. Whatever fruit one gets by keeping fast (by not taking food) and worship Krishn methodically on Jyeshth Poornimaa, the same fruit one gets by reading its three chapters. If somebody listens its 10 chapters with Bhakti, he gets Moksh. This Puraan is the best for doing good for oneself. It stops bad dreams. If somebody reads its even one Shlok. he immediately separates out from the sinners.

This Puraan should be told only to saints, because it is secret of the secrets. It should be told in front of Vishnu, in some holy place, to Dwi-Jaati people. Who doubt Puraan, their all Punya get destroyed. Who want to earn Punya without any hard work, they should listen to Puraan. Now you listen to this Puraan. By listening to it a man gets freed from the bondage of birth and death and old age cycles. Who talks to other people while listening to it, he does not understand anything in spite of hearing everything. Who worships Vishnu, he gets all four - Dharm, Arth, Kaam and Moksh.
