Rishi said - "Hey Soot Jee, Now you tell us the glory of Maagh Snaan." Soot Jee said - "You are a great devotee of Krishn that is why you ask the stories of Bhagavaan repetitively. Now I tell you the glory of Maagh Snaan. Who listen to it in the morning, their Punya increase and sins are destroyed. Once King Dileep said to Vashishth Jee - "Bhagavan, I have heard a lot about punishment code, conduct, King's Dharm, Yagya, and worship of Vishnu. Now I want to hear something about Maagh Snaan. Tell me how to do it."
Vashishth Jee said - "Who wants to attain Good Gati without doing Hom, Yagya and Ishtaa Poort Karm, they should take bath early in the morning in the outside water. Who want to go to Swarg without donating cow, land, sesame seeds, gold or food, they should always take bath in the morning in Maagh Maas. Who cannot keep fast for 3 nights, do Krichchhra and Paraak etc Vrat, they should also take bath in Maagh Maas. In Vaishaakh Maas one should donate water and food; in Kaartik Maas one should do Tapasyaa and worship. Who have taken morning bath, donated various things, and did Paath of Vishnu Stotra, they live in Vishnu Dhaam comfortably. Leaving a favorite thing and living with discipline are always helpful in Dharm. If this Snaan is done with any desire, it is fulfilled; and if it is done without desire, it gives Moksh. Who go to Swarg by doing other Punya Karm, they come back to Earth after their Punyas are over; but who do Maagh Snaan, they never come back. Bhrigu Rishi said to Vidyaadhar on Mani Parvat - "Who in Maagh Maas, when the morning redness is much, takes bath outside the village, he uplifts the 7 generations of his parents and he himself goes to Swarg assuming Divine body."
Dileep asked - "When did Bhrigu Rishi preach this to Vidyaadhar on Mani Parvat?" Vashishth Jee said - "In olden times, once there was no rain for 12 years. People started dying with hunger. All people moved here and there and the region between Himaalaya and Vindhyaachal became empty. All Yagya etc got stopped. Dharm got disappeared. There was no food, fruit, flower or water on Prithvi. At that time Bhrigu Rishi lived on the banks of Narmadaa River. He also went to Himaalaya with his disciples. There is a Manikoot named Parvat which is made of gold and gems, in the West of Kailaash Parvat. Seeing that Parvat, Rishi got very happy and he built his Aashram there only. There he did Tapasyaa for a very long time.
One day a Vidyaadhar descended from Parvat with his wife. They came to Rishi and stood in front of him with a sad face. Brahmarshi asked him with a sweet voice - "Vidyaadhar, Tell me happily that why are you so sad?" Vidyaadhar said - "Hey Dwij, Listen to the reason of my sorrow. Because of my Punya I went to Dev Lok. In spite of experiencing pleasure of Divine body, Divine woman and Divine pleasures, my face has become like a lion's face. I don't know which bad Karm gave me this result. Thinking about this, I am not at peace at my heart. There one more reason. This my wife was very soft-spoken and beautiful. No woman of Swarg can be compared to her. Now there is no comparison between her and me."
Bhrigu Jee said - "Whatever bad Karm you have done in your previous life listen to it. Not-worthy Karm, however small it is, gives very terrible result. In your previous life, you kept fast on Maagh Ekaadashee and massaged oil in your body on Dwaadashee that is why your face has become like a lion. After keeping fast on Ekaadashee and then using oil on Dwaadashee gave ugly body to Ilaa's son Pururavaa. The he went to Himaalaya, took bath in Gangaa River and sat on an Aasan. He started meditating on Bhagavaan's form. Then he held his Praan Vaayu back and did Tapasyaa without eating anything for one month. Bhagavaan got pleased from him in a very little time and appeared before him. That day was Maagh Shukla Dwaadashee. He sprinkled water from His conch and bestowed him with beauty. He became so handsome that even Urvashee got attracted to him and she wished to obtain him as her husband. So Vidyaadhar, Karm's Gati is like that. You know that, then why do you become so sad?
If you want to become handsome, then take my advice and do Maagh Snaan in Manikoot River. You start that on Paush Shukla Ekaadashee. Start sleeping on the ground from that day. Do not eat anything for one month, and take bath three times a day and worship Vishnu after the bath. When Maagh Shukla Ekaadashee will come, your all sins will be destroyed on that day. On the day of Dwaadashee, I will perform your Abhishek with Abhimantrit water and you will become as handsome as Kaam Dev.
Vidyaadhar, Maagh Snaan destroys calamities and sins and bestows fruits of all kinds of donations. Whatever fruit is obtained by taking bath in Pushkar, Kurukshetra, Kaashee, Prayaag following all kinds of disciplines for 10 years; the same fruit is obtained by taking bath in Maagh Maas for three days only. Who desire to enjoy Swarg Lok for long time, they must do Maagh Snaan, wherever they can get water, in the morning while Soorya Dev is in Makar Raashi (Capricorn Sign). Who wish for long life, health, beauty, good fortune, they must do this Maagh Snaan while Soorya Dev is in Makar Raashi. Other Karm, if done without devotion, do not give desired fruits; but this Maagh Snaan, even if done without devotion, gives complete result. As the Moon wanes and waxes in a month, in the same way by doing this Snaan sins decrease and Punya increase. In Sat Yug it is Tapasyaa, in Tretaa Yug it is Gyaan, in Dwaapar Yug it is worship and in Kali Yug it is Daan which is considered important. But Maagh Snaan is the best in all the Yug."
Hearing this, Vidyaadhar stayed there, did Maagh Snaan there and got desired results. Bhrigu Jee also came down to Narmadaa River. Vashishth Jee said - "Raajan, This is the glory of Maagh, who listens to its glory everyday he obtains all kinds of pleasures.
