7-Aashwin Maas Vrat
Aashwin Maas is
the 7th month of Hindu Lunar calendar year. This whole month is full of
religious activities. From :----
(1) Aashwin Krishn Pratipadaa - Aashwin Amaavasyaa - Pitri Paksh
Continuing from Bhaadrapad Poornimaa, this whole fortnight is dedicated to
Pitar or Pitri (dead ancestors). Annual Shraaddh or Shraddhaa is offered
to one's Pitar on these 16 Tithi. Since there are 16 Tithi in one Lunar
month, these 16 Tithi are dedicated to the dead ancestors corresponding to
the Tithi on which he or she died. If one died on Ashtamee then his or her
Shraaddh will be observed on Ashtamee of this fortnight.
(2) Aashwin Shukla Pratipadaa to Navamee - Nava Durgaa
These nine days, Nava Durgaa or
Nava Raatri, are devoted to worship nine Devee on nine days.
(3) Aashwin Shukla Dashamee - Dashaharaa
As Nava Durgaa ends, the next day
Dashaharaa is celebrated. It is Kshatriya's festival. This day people
worship their weapons - Kshatriya worship their guns etc, Vaishya worship
their writing pens etc. It is said that Raam killed Raavan on this day. So
this day is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Raam over Raavan, or
good over bad, or the end of the demon's atrocities. The statues of Raavan
and Kumbhkarn are burnt and social fares are arranged. People start preparing
for Deepaavalee also by cleaning their houses after celebrating this festival.
(4) Aashwin Poornimaa - Sharad Poornimaa
This is called Sharad Poornimaa
also. This is the most important Poornimaa among all Poornimaa for Hindu. It is
believed that this night the Moon is very clear and its rays are full of Amrit.
This day people keep fast, do Darshan of Moon and break fast. Chivadaa (or Chaulaa,
or from which people make Pohaa, or beaten rice) is soaked in milk and yogurt separately
and made rice Kheer (rice pudding) also. They are kept under the moonlight for the
whole night so that they can soak the Amrit coming from the Moon rays. Next day morning
they are eaten.
Many people
keep Poornimaa Vrat every Poornimaa and do Satyanaaraayan Kathaa.
[I have done a
special Poornimaa Vrat - "Paanch Naaj Pachchees Poono" - means five
types of grains are eaten on five Poornimaa each, thus completing 25 Poornimaa
Vrat. These grains were - wheat, rice, split yellow Moong Daal, barley and
Kootoo (Phaaphad flour, or buckwheat flour). On 26th Poornimaa its Udyaapan is
done. A Braahman is fed and some clothes and Dakshinaa are offered to him. This
Vrat is started from this Poornima. There is no restriction of salt in this Vrat]
