In Kashmeer, since the majority of Kashmeeree Pandit are followers of Shiv, Mahaa Shiv Raatri festival is observed for fifteen days beginning with Padavaa of the waning Moon (Krishn Paksh) of Phaalgun Maas to the Padavaa of the waxing Moon (Shukla Paksh). The Shiv Raatri Poojaa is known as "Batuk Poojaa". On the 11th day, Poojaa room is decorated with all pictures of gods and goddess. The 12th day is the day of Ganesh Poojaa and Maa Gangaa Poojaa.

Why from Waning Moon to Waxing Moon – "Moon of Retribution" Waning Moon means the Moon is decreasing in size, moving from the Full Moon towards the New Moon. This is a time for spells that banish, release, and reverse. This is a time to break bad habits or bad addictions, to end bad relationships. This is a time of deep intuition and a time for divination. Time of Goddess to meet with Devaadhidev Mahaadev. The period of the waning Moon lasts for about 14 days. A time to review endeavors and correct mistakes. Settle disputes and make amends. A time to start taking things apart. Goals: Start work on removing obstacles. Give thanks for what has been achieved. Time of growth. Moon of Harvest". Continue work from last phase. Good time to concentrate on removal of self from situations, relationships, and habits. Time for self-analysis, rest and recuperation, meditation and readying oneself for the energies of the New Birth. This cycle's experiences have culminated and one must now prepare for rebirth.

The 13th day is the actual day of Mahaa Shivraatri.
On the 14th day, the daughters and son-in-law are invited by the parents. It is a day of grand feast. This day is similar to Divaalee. Money or presents are given to younger ones. People greet each other and send sweets and Prasaad. This day is known as Dyraa Daham.

The 15th day heralds the end of the festival. This is the time for Visarjan – clay pots, clay gods must go back to earth and water. All the earthen pots are collected and immersed in the nearest river or lake. Rotee are made of rice flour and soaked walnuts are distributed as Prasaad to the members of the community. In the evening they play local fire works called 'Ja-tun-tun'. Thus comes to an end the Kashmeeree Pandit version of Herath, the Maha Shiv Raatri of India.
