On Character

Education yields humility;
Humility yields character;
Character yields wealth (courage, fortitude and wisdom);
Wealth supports righteous (Dhaarmik) life;
Righteousness yields happiness.
--Hitopadesh

Sow a thought, reap an action;
sow an action, reap a habit,
sow a habit, reap a Character,
sow a character, reap a destiny.
--Brihadaaranyak Upanishad

Thoughts lead to an action
Action leads to habit
Habits make character
Character makes the Destiny

Watch your Thoughts, they become words.
Watch your Words, they become actions.
Watch your Actions, they become habits.
Watch your Habits, they become character
Watch your Character, for it becomes your Destiny.

You sow an action and reap a tendency
You sow a tendency and reap a habit
You sow a habit and reap your character
You sow a Character and reap your Destiny
Thus your Destiny is your own creation - Destiny is bundle of habits,

If wealth is lost, nothing has lost
If health is lost, something has lost
If Character is lost, everything has lost

You can fall in love with the personality of any one
but remember finally you have to live with the character and not with the personality....

Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.
--Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), Lincoln's Own Stories

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's Character, give him power.
--Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

Personality can open doors, but only Character can keep them open.
--Elmer G. Letterman

In attempts to improve your Character, know what is in your power and what is beyond it.
--Francis Thompson (1859-1907)

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet.
Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.
--Helen Keller (1880-1968)

Of all the properties which belong to honorable men, not one is so highly prized as that of Character.
--Henry Clay (1777-1852)

A man's Character is his fate.
--Heraclitus (540 BC-480 BC), On the Universe

When the Character of a man is not clear to you, look at his friends.
--Japanese Proverb

To succeed is nothing, it's an accident; but to feel no doubts about oneself is something very different: it is Character.
--Marie Leneru, Oprah Magazine, May 2004
