6-Mahaakavi Tulasee Daas-2

Acclamation to Raam Charit Maanas

After Tulasee had written his Maanas, Hanuman appeared before him and told him to take the Maanas to Banaaras and let Lord Vishwanaath hear it first. Tulasee did so and started reading his work in front of the Lord Vishwanaath in Vishwanaath Temple and the learned Pandit of Kaashee. The palm leaves bundle on which the Maanas was written was placed in the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord and the door was locked after he finished reading it. All wanted to see whether it would be accepted by the Lord or not. When they went in the morning and opened the door, there was a loud sound, "Satyam Shivam Sundaram", and when they opened the sanctum sanctorum, they saw the palm leaves bundle covered with the holy cloth of Vishwanaath and on it the words Satyam Shivam Sundaram were seen. Tulasee Daas was honored by the temple priest and people raised slogan Goswaamee Tulaseedaas kee Jaya".

The fame of Tulasee Daas grew in Banaaras so much that the other Pandit sank into oblivion. This created jealousy among them and they tried to undermine the work of Tulasee saying that it was full of grammar mistakes. They even tried to steal the manuscript once when some big monkeys came from nowhere and caught them in their tails and threw them in the river. One Taantrik expert wrote a Mantra and placed it on the threshold of Tulasee Daas but a monkey took it and threw it on the head of the Taantrik and he became mad. Tulasee Daas was oblivious of all this and happily chanted the name of Raam and gave discourses on Raam Charit Maanas.

Some Pandit took the copy of the Maanas and showed it to Madhusoodan Saraswate, a great A-Dwait scholar, well known for his commentaries on the works of Shankar, a great exponent of Nyaaya Shaastra but at the same time a great devotee of Krishn. They complained to him that the work of Tulasee Daas is full of mistakes and is in vernacular and not in chaste Sanskrit and he influenced the priests of the temple of Vishwanaath who enacted a drama to imply that the Lord Himself approved of it.

Madhusoodan Saraswatee started reading the Maanas and went on reading forgetting all his other austerities, with tears streaming from his eyes. In the end he said that the holy city of Banaaras had acquired a new glory due to Tulasee Daas. He said that in Banaaras known as Aanand Kaanan, forest of bliss, due to Lord Siva doing his Aanand Taandav there, there is now a mobile tree called Tulasee Daas and in that tree there is a bouquet of poetry, and Raam the bee hovers around it.

Aanand kaananehyas min jangams tulasee taruh
Kavitaamanjaree bhaati raam bhramar aabhooshitaa

Then at another time the Pandit placed the of the Maanas at the bottom and all the other works on ancient scholars and of their own on the top of it. They left it in the Sannidhi of Vishwanaath and locked the door. Next morning they found that the Manas was at the top of every other book and their own works had gone to bottom. This convinced most of them that Tulasee Daas was blessed by the Lord.

Once a Braahman named Chand turned evil and committed all crimes but he had respect for Tulasee Daas very much, not because of devotion, but out of pity that he was so innocent. Tulasee Daas tried to change him by teaching him Raam Naam but he would not listen. One day Tulasee Daas sang in jest on him as

bholaa chandaa bechaaraa mandaa chalataa nirvichaar,

Chand thinking that he was making fun of him but finding the song to be nice started singing it. Then Tulasee said to him that he has already chanted the name of Raam unknowingly. He turned a new leaf from that moment. There is nothing strange about this because the Lord Himself said in Geetaa,

Kshipram bhavati Dharmaatmaa shaashwat shaanti nigachchhati,

even if one is a confirmed sinner if he acquires the grace of God or the blessing of the saints, he becomes good immediately, that is, if he had that Punya Karm.

Chand started singing Raam Naam with Tulasee Daas and became his disciple. When the people who hated Chand chastised Tulasee Daas for accepting Chand as his disciple, Tulasee Daas proved that he had become pure by taking him to the temple of Vishwanaath and asking him to put a handful of grass in mouth of Nandee and in front of all, Nandee ate it. Thus Chand became a devotee overnight and stood as an example of the wonder of Saadhu Sang.

When Krishn Turned into Raam for Tulasee

Once Tulasee Daas went to Dwaarakaa (a city in modern day state of Gujaraat, India, which is a birthplace of Krishn) to visit Nand Daas, a devotee of Krishn. On reaching there, he found Nand Daas in the Krishn temple. Tulasee Daas could not bear to look at the idol of Krishn. He could not understand why Nand Daas worshipped Krishn instead of Raam.

Nand Daas was saddened by Tulasee Daas' incorrect attitude towards other deities. He prayed to Krishn to help his friend. Within minutes, the idol of Krishn was transformed into that of Raam. Immediately, Tulasee Daas realized his mistake. He realized that both were different forms of the same Lord and none was superior to the other. He felt repentant and tears started rolling down his cheeks. He hugged the idol and asked the Lord to forgive him. Nand Daas was happy too, as Tulasee Daas had finally realized the Truth. Both felt gratitude towards the Lord.

Another version - There is one such event more, I don't know whether it is another version of the same event or just one another event, but it is presented here. Once Tulasee heard the beauty of Mathuraa's temples so he came to Magthuraa and entered in one of the temples of Krishn. he looked at the idol and admired its beauty but he did not bow his head to it. The priest of that temple said to him to bow his head to Bhagvaan, but Tulasee still did not bow his head to that idol and read a Dohaa -

Tulasee Maathaa Tab Nabai jab Dhanush Baan Leu Haath

It is believed that that immediately Krishn appeared carrying a bow and arrow in His hands and then only Tulasee bowed his head to Him.
