Glossary

This is not a complete glossary for the terms used in literature, but a few terms which are used in this website in relation to literature are given here.

Stotra
Stotra are the praising words, normally used for some Devtaa, such as Shiv Stotra will be a poem written in praise of Shiv.

Upamaan, Upameya and Upamaa
Upamaan is that object which is compared to something else - and that is always superior to that something else.
Upameya is that something else to which a thing is compared with, so Upameya is always inferior to the Upamaan
Upamaa is that quality for which the Upamaan is compared to Upameya.
For example - Seetaa's face is like Moon. In this sentence Seetaa's face is Upamaan, Moon is Upameya and like is Upamaa.

Vakrokti
This is a compound word - Vakra means "Crooked" and Ukti means poetic expression or speech. Vakrokti is manifested at six levels in language, viz. the phonetic level (Varn Vinyaas), the lexical level (Pad Poorvaarddh), the grammatical level (Pad Paraarddh), the sentential level (Vaakya), the contextual level (Prakaran) and finally the compositional level (Prabandh). Vakrokti gives the language a strikingness (Vaichitriya) and causes aesthetic delight to the reader.
