4-Nine Forms of Devee (Nava Durgaa)-2

The following nine Devee are worshipped in both Nava Durgaa days -Chaitra an Aashwin. Their names appear in this order in Devee Mahaatmya of Maarkandeya Puraan.

(5) Skand Maataa
सिंहासना गता नित्यं पद्माश्रि तकरद्वया |  शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी ||

The fifth aspect of the Mother Durgaa is known as Skand Maataa - the mother of Skand or Kaarttikeya, who was chosen by gods as their commander in chief in the war against the demon Taarakaasur. She is worshipped on the 5th day of Nava Raatri. She is accompanied by the Skand in his infant form. Skand Maataa has four arms and three eyes, holds the infant Skand in her right upper arm and a lotus in her right hand which is slightly raised upwards. The left arm is in pose to grant boons with grace and in left lower hand which is raised also holds a lotus. She has a bright complexion and often depicted as seated on a lotus. It is said that by the mercy of Skand Maataa, even the idiot becomes an ocean of knowledge. The great and legendary Sanskrit Scholar Kaali Daas created his two masterpieces works - Raghuvansh and Meghdoot by the grace of Skand Maataa only. Skand Maataa is considered as a deity of fire. She rides on Lion.

(6) Kaatyaayanee
चंद्र हासोज्जवलकरा शार्दूलवर वाहना | कात्यायनी शुभं दद्या देवी दानव घातिनि ||

The sixth form of Mother Durgaa is known as Kaatyaayanee, who is worshipped on the 6th day of Nava Raatri. The legend behind her name goes thus: Once upon a time, there was a great sage called Kat, who had a son named Kaatya. Kat was very famous and renowned in the lineage of saints. He underwent long austerities and penance in order to receive the grace of the Mother Goddess. He wished to have a daughter in the form of a goddess. According to his wish and desire the Mother Goddess granted his request. So Devee was born to Kat as his daughter and was called as Kaatyaayanee because of being the daughter of Kat. Later she did penance on the banks of Yamunaa to get Krishn as her husband which she did. She is considered as the prime deity of Brij Mandal. Maa Kaatyaayanee has three eyes and four hands. . One left hand holds a weapon and the other a lotus She rides on Lion.

(7) Kaal Raatri
एकवेणी जपाकर्णपूरा नग्ना खरास्थिता । लम्बोष्टी कर्णिकाकर्णी तैलाभ्यक्तशरीरिणी ॥
वामपादोल्लसल्लोह लता कण्टक भूषणा । वर्धनमूर्धध्वजा कृष्णा कालरात्रिर्भयङ्करी ॥

This is the seventh form of Durgaa and is worshipped on the 7th day of Nava Raatri. She has a dark complexion, disheveled hair and a fearlessness posture. A necklace flashing lightning adorns her neck. She has three eyes that shine bright and terrible flames emanate from her breath. Her vehicle is the donkey. Her raised right hand always seems to grant boons to all worshippers and all her right lower hand is in the pose of allaying fears. Her appearance is very fierce, but she always gives good fruits, so one must not fear her. Her left upper hand holds a thorn-like weapon, made of iron and there is a dragger in the lower left hand. She is black like Goddess Kaalee and holds a sparkling sword in her right hand battle all evil. Her gesture of protection assures us of freedom from fear and troubles. So she is also known as Shubhaankaree one who does good to her devotees. Her Vaahan is a faithful donkey. The destroyer of darkness and ignorance, she spills out fire from her nostrils. She holds a sharp sword in her right hand and blesses her devotees with her lower hand.

(8) Mahaa Gauree
श्वेते वृषे समारुढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः । महागौरी शुभं दघान्महादेव प्रमोददा ॥

She is worshipped on the 8thh day of Nava Raatri. This is the form of Paarvatee when she did penance to get Shiv as her husband. It is believed that due to the intense Tapas performed by her without moving caused soil and dust to collect on her body. Shiv cleaned her with Ganga water, then only she got the fair shiny complexion, regained her beauty and got the name as Mahaa Gauree which mean extremely white. Purity is depicted in this form of Durgaa. The Goddess is in the form of eight-year old child with complexion as fair as a conch, moon and jasmine. Her clothes and ornaments are all white and pure. She has three eyes and four arms. Her right upper hand is in the pose of allaying fear and right lower hand holds a trident in it. The left upper hand holds a tambourine and the lower one is in the pose of blessing. As a result of her worship, all sins of past, present and future of devotees are washed away due to her worship and devotees get purified in all aspects of life. Her power is unfailing and instantly fruitful. Gauree is intelligent, peaceful and calm.. She wears white or green Saaree, has four arms, and rides on a bull. Her right hand is in the pose of allaying fear and her right lower hand holds a trident. The left upper hand holds a Damaroo (a small rattle drum) and the lower one is in the pose of granting boons to her devotees.

The 8th day of Nava Raatri Poojaa has much importance. Durgaa Ashtamee Poojaa is held in many parts of India. If people worship her after fast they get fruits immediately. In front of the picture of the Mother as in front of Paarvatee in Shiv temple one can worship Gauree. She appears in the form of Ambaa, or Kalikaa, or Bahucharaji etc. She stays in devotees' heart and gives best fruits whether we worship her in any farm. Wearing Red, Saffron, Yellow, White, Pink color would be auspicious for the devotees on this day. Mahaa Gauree can be seen in a temple at Kankhal near pilgrim center Haridwaar, India.

(9) Siddhidaatree
सिद्ध गन्धर्व यज्ञद्यैर सुरैर मरैरपि |  सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात्‌ सिद्धिदा सिद्धि दायिनी ||\

Siddhidatri is the ninth form of Goddess. She is worshipped on the 9th day of Nava Raatri. She should be worshipped with Mantra. Because she gives all kinds of Siddhi that is why her name is Siddhidaatree Devee. She has supernatural healing powers. She has four arms and she is always in a blissful happy enchanting pose. She rides on the lion as her vehicle. She blesses all Gods, saints, Yogee, Taantrik and all devotees as a manifestation of the Mother Goddess. In Devee Bhaagvat Puraan it is mentioned that Shiv worshipped her and was blessed with all Siddhi (supernatural powers). By her blessings his half body became female and other half body male in the Avataar of Ardh Naareeshwar.
