Planets: Position:

Planets have a specific position in every chart. This position is very important while making predictions, knowing about the Planet itself etc etc. 12 Houses in a chart are consistent while the 12 Signs of Zodiac are not consistent in those Houses. For example, 1st House or 1st Bhaav is fixed but there may be any Sign in that Bhaav - Capricorn, Aquarius, or any other Sign. And any Planet can sit in that House, or sometimes there is no Planet also in a House. Since we are talking about Planets, we have to see a Planet's position in a chart. There are two types of positions of a planet in a chart - House and degree, menas in which House he is posited and at what degree he is.

Here we will talk only about his position in a house - which House he is sitting in? That specific position makes his position specific. There are 6 types of Houses, so that Type of House decides his position --
(1) Kendra (Cardinal) Houses - 1, 4, 7, 10 Houses
(2) Trikon (Trine) Houses - 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9. 11, 12 Houses
(3) Panaphar (Fixed) Houses - 2, 5, 8, 11 Houses
(4) Upachaya Houses,
(5) Aapoklim Houses,
(6) Opposite Houses - like 1 and 7, or 3 and 9 etc

For example -
Planets in Kendra Houses will give its effect in first part of Life,
Planets in Panaphar Houses will give their effect in the middle part of life,
Planets from their House of Exaltation (when they are in Opposite House, they are in Debilitation)
Planets located in Aapoklim Houses will give their effects in the end part of life
One woman had Mercury + Venus + Jupiter in Lagna and there was an extraordinary aura on her face as if some light was emitting from her face which was due to the 3 Shubh Graha in her Lagna,

There are some other types of Houses based on their characteristics ---
Weakest, malefic, Moksh, and Dusthaan House (12the House)
Strongest, Dharm, Benefic House (9th House)
Mool Trikon is not a House but a specific space in a House where a Planet gives his maximum effect in a native's life

Exaltation and Debilitation

The exaltation points of these planets too have been given to show the power of punishment or rewards each individual deserves in his life, as per the planet being in Exalted or Debilitated state of being in his chart, or being just normal to make him a common man. This power is given in the measure scale of the degrees.

If one checks the Sub-Lords of the Exaltation degrees of the Planets, he would find that we have only 2 Planets which are in majority as Sub Lords for all these planets at their Exaltation points. Jupiter and Saturn. Does it click somewhere? Isn't it strange that the other 7 Graha have gone behind the screen, while only these 2 remain? I would give explanation for one Planet and leave the rest for all to form their own judgments.

(As Taught by one of my Jyotish Guru) Sun is the Kaarak for Soul, as well as he represents Dhanvantari (Lord of Medicine). Sun becomes Exalted in Ketu Star. Ketu is Kaarak for Moksh and Ketu is ruled by Ashwinee Kumaar (medicine). At the Exaltation point of Sun, his Sub-Lord is Saturn. Saturn is Kaarak for sacrifice or devotion. Sun is the Kaarak for Soul and Ego or Status. Till the time the native would not sacrifice his Ego, he cannot achieve Moksh (Ketu).

Such explanations and relation with its Sub-Lord and Nakshatra can be given for every Exaltation point of each planet. This is the power of Logic in our Indian astrology. There is no co-incidence. Every matter is pre-set by the Lord Himself. We only have to perceive these. Practical plus Esoteric Logic. If these two Planets Jupiter and Saturn are well placed, in anyone's chart, You would find most of the common problems seen all around, missing in this person's Life. Ultimately only Jupiter and Saturn are the main planets in our Life, who rule Dharm, Arth, Kaam and Moksh. because in the Natural Zodiac Jupiter and Saturn rules, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Signs / Houses, which are as said basically concerned with Knowledge, Dharm, Karm and Moksh.

Should a Planet be considered as Exalted or Debilitated by just virtue of being in a particular sign?
We will take some examples for this -
Jupiter is Exalted in Cancer at 5 degrees. Here the Nakshatra which appears is Pushya, ruled by Saturn.

Example 1 - Suppose Jupiter is at 5 Degrees in Cancer , for a Capricorn native. This Jupiter would give the native a good physical strength, happiness through marriage, wealth, wealth also by marriage , and happiness of family.

Example 2 - Suppose the same Jupiter had been in 18 degrees Cancer for the same native. Then what would have been the results? The native would have been prone to ill health. No connection of this Jupiter to wealth or family happiness. No connection to happiness through marriage, instead would have been worse for marriage and created strives in the married Life.

In both above cases The Jupiter is exalted for the same native in the same Lagna and sign and house, but results diametrically different when degrees are different. So the Degree does matters. All this is not written clearly in the Books available with us, because this knowledge is not meant to fall in wrong hands. Its when we have the fortune to meet a good Guru and learn from him, that we realize that what appears on surface, may not be what is intended to be known by all.

I think as per standard texts ----
Sun exalted in all of Aries - greatest at 10 deg Aries
Moon exalted between 0-3 deg of Taurus - greatest at 3 deg Taurus. Between 3-30 deg of Taurus it is Mool Trikon
Mars exalted in all of Capricorn - greatest at 28 deg Capricorn
Mercury exalted between 0-15 deg of Virgo - greatest at 15 deg Virgo, Mool Trikon between 15-20 deg Virgo and Swa-kshetra between 20-30 deg Virgo
Jupiter exalted in all of Cancer - greatest at 5 deg Cancer
Venus exalted in all of Pisces - greatest at 27 deg Pisces
Shani exalted in all of Libra - greatest at 20 deg Libra
BPHS - Chap 3 Shlok's 49 - 54 incl ..
Jaatak Paarijat - Adhyaaya 1 Shlok 29
Sarvartha Chintamani - Chap 1 Shlok 30
Saravali - Chap 1 Shlok's 35 - 36 incl ..
Phaladeepika - Chap 1 Shlok's 6 - 7 incl ..

I checked the relevant Shlok and found this -
BPHS - Shlok 49-54 Moon - First 3 degrees of Taurus are considered as Exalted.
Mercury - First 15 degrees of Virgo are considered as Exalted.
For the rest of the Planets - No mention
Jaatak Paarijaat Shlok 29 does not give any such range of Exaltation at all, except the highest point of Exaltation degrees.
Saravali Shloka 35-36 again does not give such range. they only give the Deep Exaltation degrees.

[BPHS.pdf – Chap 3]
49-50. Exaltation and Debilitation - For the 7 Graha, from Soorya on, the exaltation Raashi are, respectively, Mesh, Vrishabh, Makar, Kanyaa, Kark, Meen and Tulaa. The deepest exaltation degrees are, respectively, 10, 3, 28, 15, 5, 27 and 20 deg in those Raashi. And in the 7th Raashi from the said Exaltation Raashi each Graha has its own debilitation. The same degrees of deep exaltation apply to deep fall.
51-54. Additional Dignities - In Sinha the first 20 degrees are Soorya's Mool Trikon, while the rest is his own Bhaav. After the first 3 degrees of exaltation portion in Vrishabh, for Chandra, the rest is her Mool Trikon. Mangal has the first 12 degrees in Mesh, as Mool Trikon with the rest therein becoming simply his own Bhaav. For Budh, in Kanyaa the first 15 degrees are exaltation zone, the next 5 degrees Mool Trikon and the last 10 degrees are own Bhaav. The first one third of Dhanu is the Mool Trikon of Guru, while the remaining part thereof is his own Bhaav. Shukra divides Tulaa into two halves keeping the first as his Mool Trikon and the second as his own Bhaav. Shani's arrangements are same in Kumbh, as Soorya has in Sinh Raashi.

[Kalyana Varmas Saravali.pdf – Chap 3] 34. Mool-trikon of Planets - Leo, Taurus, Aries, Virgo, Sagittarius, Libra and Aquarius are the respective Mool-trikon for the planets from the Sun onwards.
35-36. Exaltation and Fall -  Aries, Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo, Cancer, Pisces and Libra, respectively, are the Signs of exaltation for the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. These are deeply exalted at 10, 3, 28, 15, 5, 27 and 20 Degrees in the respective Raashi. The Raashi opposite exaltation are the places of debilitation for the planets concerned. And the respective degrees are of deep fall.

Phaldeepika by Mantreswara.pdf – Chap 1 6.
The Lords of the 12 signs are as under:
Aries – Mars                  Libra - Venus
Taurus – Venus              Scorpio - Mars
Gemini - Mercury          Sagittarius - Jupiter
Cancer - The Moon        Capricorn - Saturn
Leo - The Sun                Aquarius - Saturn
Virgo - Mercury           Pisces - Jupiter

The signs of exaltation and fall of the seven planets from the Sun onwards are as under —
Planet         Sign of Exaltation                Sign of Fall
The Sun             Aries                                Libra
The Moon           Taurus                               Scorpio
Mars                   Capricorn                         Cancer
Mercury             Virgo                                 Pisces
Jupiter                Cancer                              Capricorn
Venus                   Pisces                               Virgo
Saturn                 Libra                                Aries
This means that the seventh or the opposite sign from the sign of exaltation of a planet, is the sign of fall or debilitation.
Notes— There is great difference of opinion amongst the ancient learned about the exaltation and debilitation signs of Raahu and Ketu. Mantreshwara has expressed no opinion in that regard. According to Sarvarth Chintamani the exaltation sign of Rahu is Gemini and his sign of debilitation is Sagittarius.
Reverse is the case with Ketu. According to BPHS, Taurus and Scorpio are respectively the exaltation signs of Raahu and Ketu and the signs opposite to them are their signs of debilitation.

The highest points of exaltation and the lowest points of debilitation of the various planets are as under:
Planet        Highest points of exaltation (Deep exaltation)       Lowest point of debilitation (Deep fall)
The Sun             Aries 10th degree                                                        Libra 10th degree
The Moon           Taurus 3rd degree                                                       Scorpio 3rd degree
Mars                  Capricorn 28th degree                                                 Cancer 28th degree
Mercury             Virgo 15th degree                                                         Pisces 15th degree
Jupiter               Cancer 5th degree                                                      Capricorn 5th degree
Venus                  Pisces 27th degree                                                     Virgo 27th degree
Saturn                Libra 20th degree                                                      Aries 20th degree
Notes — For example Jupiter at the 5th degree of Cancer will be in deep exaltation. Then he moves downwards from that point and gets into deep debilitation when he reaches 5th degree of Capricorn.

7. The Mool Trikon signs of the planets the Sun onward are Leo, Taurus, Aries, Virgo, Sagittarius, Libra and Aquarius respectively. Below are given the portions of the own sign and Mool Trikon from the Sun onwards :—
Planet                Sign              Mool-trikon Portion                       Own sign Portion
The Sun              Leo                       0° - 20°                                     21° - 30°
The Moon        Taurus                      4° -                                           30° -
Mars                Aries                       0° - 2°                                       13° - 30°
Mercury           Virgo                      16° - 20°                                     21° - 30°
Jupiter          Sagittarius                 0° - 10°                                      11° - 30°
Venus                Libra                      0° - 5°                                         6° - 30°
Saturn             Aquarius                  0° - 20°                                      21° - 30°
