Who Was Sheikh Chillee
From  My Hindi Forum

Sheikh Chillee was a Muslim and he was born in a Muslim nomad clan family of Baloochistaan, in Kwetaa. Since the family was always on move, so he could not learn reading and writing Since his family had to face several difficulties and he did not like this nomadic life, so he started daydreaming. For the same reason he was always after miracles and went after Peer and Faqeer also. The legend goes that because of his strange movements, one day his clan people went forward leaving his sleeping near a bush. This was a shock for him and his life took a new turn.

How he came from dry land of Kwetaa to green Kuru Kshetra, it is unknown but we can just imagine that he might have come with some Caravan. Jhajjar was a small state in those days, and Panjaab was ruled by Muslims, so Sheikh Chillee got a new life here, but his daydreaming got increased more and more instead of being reduced.

Here he met a rich man named Haafiz Nooraanee in Naarnaul. He like Sheikh Chillee very much so he brought him with him. being a rich man he knew some people in Navaab's office so he got him employed in Navaab's office. Later he got him married too, so at least his life came to get settled. Although he could never earn so much that he could enjoy it lavishly, but he was able to earn so much that his necessities were fulfilled.

It is said that in 1800, Sheikh Chillee went back to Kuru kshetra from Jhajjar and became a Faqeer. At that time he was almost 80. Haafiz Nooraanee also died by that time. His wife also died. British started proceeding to wards Panjaab after capturing Avadh. By then many people started following him. Later he also died. His tomb is in Delhi.

He is normally depicted as a fool and daydreamer. Many of his stories are very short.

I have taken this story from the above site, but I am not sure that this Sheikh Chillea is the same Sheikh Chillee who stories are famous among Indian children, because we have never heard that Sheikh Chillee was a real man. he seems to be fictitious man and Sheikh Chillee means a fool and daydreamer. It is not a name. Because the tomb he is talking about is of Saleem ---  not of Sheikh Chillee.

If somebody else knows about him, please let me know.
