Paativrat Dharm

Paativrat Dharm

Paativrat Dharm has its own place in our religion. All kinds of Dharm (duties) have been described for all Varn and all Aashram (the four Varn and the four Aashram), but wherever a woman's Dharm has been described, it has been described that "serving only her husband is a woman's Dharm." There are many stories and instances also related to this.

(1) Power of Paativrat is so great that, when Swaahaa, a daughter of Daksh, wanted to assume Saptarshi's wives form, she could take all other wives' form but not of Vashishth's wife Arundhatee. Read the whole account of Birth of Kaarttikeya at MBH, G-4-Van/42 to know what exactly happened in this regard.

(2) Draupadee Satyabhaamaa Dialog  - G-4-Van/44 shows that even the queens who were brought up in all kinds of luxuries served their husbands with their own hands to please them and thus they were respected by their husbands.

(3) Anasooyaa Seetaa Dialog - When Raam and Seetaa go in exile and visit Atri Rishi, Anasooyaa preaches Seetaa the Paativrat Dharm only for women to observe. Read Raamaayan, 3/1, and Vaalmeeki Raamaayan, 2/43.

(4) Even Seetaa used to serve Her husband Raam with Her own hands, even though She had many maidservants to do all kinds of work.

Stories

(1) When Yudhishthir asks Maarkandeya Jee about a woman's Dharm he tells him the story of Kaushik Braahman  -  G-4-Van/39 in which his whole story is known to a Satee without telling her anything about him. Kaushik Braahman is surprised to see her powers just by serving her husband.

(2) A similar story of a Satee woman, of Sukalaa, is given in Padm Puraan, 2/7 also. In that story also the Satee knows everything about a Braahman without telling her anything. The Braahman is surprised to see her powers that were attained just by serving her husband faithfully and sincerely. This story goes longer than the story of Kaushik Braahman told by Maarkandeya Jee in MBH, G-4-Van/39. It is in reference of Teerth.

(3) Who does not know the story of a Satee Shaibyaa who did not allow Sun to rise, as Muni Maandavya cursed her husband that he would die as the Sun will rise in the morning. She did not want that her leper husband should die, so she stopped Sun from rising. The whole world went dark. Then Brahmaa Jee had to come and grant the boon to bring him to life after he had died after the sunrise. Read this story in Padm Puraan, 1/29
