The Meaning of Ganapati
His well-known name Ganapati needs a bit explanation. This explanation will let us understand better the phrase "Sarvam Idam" occurring so many times in scriptures, and particularly in the first Mantra of the "Atharv Sheersh Upanishad". Otherwise also it will be easier to understand the deeper meaning of the symbolic language employed in the 9th Mantra.

Gan word comes from the root "Gan" which means to count. Three other words "Ganya", "A-Ganya" and "Gananaa" are so derived from the same root "Gan". Ganya means which can be counted, means limited; while A-Ganya means which cannot be counted, means infinite; and "Gananaa" means to count. Everything in Creation, as we know, is limited - means it is Ganya. While Ganapati, who according to scriptures is of the form of "Om", is infinite - means A-Ganya. Thus it is more logical to call him Ganyapati - means the "Lord of all the Creation". Ganya is more comprehensive word, which includes everything - sentient and insentient, perceptible and imperceptible - or rather "Sarvam Idam".
