Birth of Raavan
Now some time passed like this. One time Sumaalee came to Mrityu Lok (Prithvi) along with his daughter Kaikasee. In fact he was looking for a groom for his daughter Kaikasee. He saw Kuber riding in his Pushpak Vimaan and got jealous, so he said to his daughter - "Putree, Now you are of marriageable age, you should get married. You should choose Maharshi Pulastya's son Muni Vishravaa then you will have more prosperous sons than Kuber and your glory will spread all over the world."

So with the permission of her father, Kaikasee went to Vishravaa Muni. At that time evening had fallen and Muni was doing Agnihotra. Kaikasee stood there at a distance from him and started digging earth from her big toe looking at Muni's feet. When Muni's Agnihotra was over, he looked above and saw a beautiful girl standing before him. He asked her - "O beautiful girl, Who are you? Where have you come from and what do you want from me?"

Kaikasee said - "I have come here by my father's orders. My name is Kaikasee. Now you yourself find out by the power of your Tap as why I have come here." Muni meditated and knew everything about her, and said - "You have come here with the desire of children. I give you three sons. But this time is not auspicious so your sons will be very ugly and satanic." Hearing this Kaikasee got scared and said - "Hey Muni, I did not want such sons from such a Gyaanee Muni like you." At this Vishravaa Muni said - "All right, then your youngest son will be like our Kul's people and very religious. So you don't worry and live in this Aashram." Kaikasee started living in Muni Vishravaa's Aashram.

After some time she gave birth to a dark-complexioned child, with red lips, 10 heads and 20 arms. Muni named him Dashagreev (as he had 10 necks). After some time she gave birth to Kumbhkarn, then a girl Shoorpanakhaa and in the last Vibheeshan. At that time musical instruments started playing automatically in the sky. That is how these three brothers and one sister were born to Vishravaa and Kaikasee, in Maharshi Pulastya Kul (family).

The Three Brothers Get Var
Now Dashagreev and Kumbhkarn grew up soon and they started troubling Rishi Muni. Vibheeshan was very religious, he started studying Ved. One day Kuber came to see his father. Kaikasee saw him riding in his Pushpak Vimaan, so she said to Raavan - "Putra, See your brother Kuber, how prosperous he is. You should also be like him." Raavan said - "Don't worry Maa, We will be more prosperous than him." He discussed all this with his two brothers and they all went to Gokarn to do Tapasyaa.

They all did an intense Tap for 10,000 years. During which period, Raavan offered his one head at the end of each 1,000 years. When he was offering his tenth head, Brahmaa Jee gave him Darshan and asked him to ask for Var. Raavan first asked the Var of immortality as every living being feared from death on Earth, but Brahmaa Jee denied it saying "do not ask for impossible, ask for something else". Then he asked - "I should not be killed by Garud, Daanav, Devtaa, Gandharv, and Raakshas." He did not include human beings and monkeys as he did not regard them dangerous at all. He considered them as his food. [So the same human beings and monkeys became the means of his death].  Brahmaa Jee gave him one Var more of his own, that all his heads that he had offered him would be as before, and he would be able to take any form he liked."

Note
V-Raamaayan, 3/13/32, says that "He did Tapasyaa for Shiv Jee for 10,000 years, and offered his heads to him several times. He got the Var from Shiv Jee not to be killed by any Devtaa, Gandharv, Daanav, Pishaach, birds, snakes, but he didn't mention about human being because he was not afraid of them."

Kumbhkarn asked for long sleep and Vibheeshan said - "When you have come to me my all wish are fulfilled but still you give me the unbroken everlasting devotion to Bhagavaan and I should know Brahmaastra without learning it." Brahmaa Jee said - "Be it so, Your all wish be fulfilled and you will become immortal." Now with these Var all the three brothers started living in Bahedaa's Van comfortably.

Once Raavan did a severe Tap to please Shiv Jee. Pleased by his Tapasyaa He gave him a "Chandrahaas' named sword. Tulasee also mentions it in his Maanas, when Hanumaan is hidden on the tree in Ashok Vaatikaa and Raavan comes to Seetaa to threaten Her to marry him.
