Usheenar

Usheenar name appears at several places.

(1) One Usheenar's name is found in Bhaagvat Puraan, 9/14. His name comes here in the reference to Yayaati's children. Yayaati's son Anu had three sons - Subhaanar, Chakshu and Paroksh. Subhaanar's son was Kaalnar, Kaalnar's son was Srinjaya, Srinjaya's son was Janamejaya - Mahaashee - Mahaamanaa - Usheenar and Titikshu. Since this Usheenar was several generations down from Yayaati, he cannot be Yayaati's daughter Maadhavee's husband.

(2) However another reference of Usheenar is found in MBH, Udyog Parv, 106-123, in reference to Gaalav's story. Gaalav Muni has to pay Guru Dakshinaa to his Guru Vishwaamitra Jee - 800 black horses with one white ear. Garud brings Gaalav Muni to Yayaati (a King of Chandra Vansh) for the horses which Yayaati does not have, so he gives him his daughter Maadhavee. Gaalav takes her to three kings - Haryaashwa of Ikshwaaku family (he has a son named Vasumaan from her); Divodaas, king of Kaashee (he also has a son from her named Pratardan); lastly he brings her to the king of Bhoj city Usheenar and he also had a son from her named Shibi. When he does not find any more horse, he brings Maadhavee to Vishwaamitra (he also has a son from her named Ashtak).

In another reference when Yayaati fell down from Swarg, he falls among his these our sons who were doing a Yagya. His daughter Maadhavee comes, introduces her sons to him and saves her father.

(3) Yet another reference of Usheenar is found in MBH, 4-Van Parv/22 (Chapters 130-131, verses 20-21). Here we read the very popular story of Raajaa Shivi with his name. Lomash Muni tells this story to Yudhishthir at the time of his pilgrimage. In the same place it is mentioned that Usheenar became the king, as prestigious as Indra after conducting a Yagya on the banks of the Vitastaa River.

While the same story is told by Maarkandeya Rishi in MBH, G-4-Van/36, again to Yudhishthir.
So it is confusing, whether Raajaa Usheeenar had this incident with him or, Raajaa Shivi had this incident with him.

The following references are also found in MBH about Usheenar.
(4) A king called Shunak gifted Usheenar a sword as per MBH, 12-Shaanti Parv Chapter 166 verse 79.
(5) Usheenar attained Swarg Lok by giving away cows as per MBH, 13-Anushaasan Parv Chapter 76 verse 25.

(6) A king named Usheenar was present at Draupadee's Swayamvar also as per MBH, Aadi Parv, Chapter 185, verse 2.
(7) Another name for Vrishadarbhi who ruled Kaashee according to MBH, Anushaasan Parv, Chapter 32.
(8) A name of a region. Its army was destroyed by Arjun, as per MBH, Karn Parv, Chapter 5, verse 47.
And the Kshatriya there became cursed, according to MBH, Anushaasan Parv, Chapter 33, verses 22-23.
