Gangaa Saagar Teerth

Back

Gangaa Saagar Teerth

This island, Saagar Island, is situated in the midst of sea, Bangaal Kee Khaadee (Bay of Bengal). The 362 days of the year it is inside the water, but comes up and visible only for three days at the time of Makar Sankraanti, 14th January, when the Sun starts coming towards north. Although Sankraanti (entering time of the Sun in another sign of zodiac) falls every month, but this one is the most important among all the twelve Sankraanti. Sankraanti is the day when the Sun transits in another sign.

There is a great fair on those three days and many thousand people take bath there. After three days it again plunges into the sea. Whoever remains there, drowns in the sea, that is why special care is taken to move all people from there in time.

This Teerth is associated with Raajaa Sagar. His 60,000 sons were burned here by Kapil Muni's glance at his Aashram. Then Bhageerath gave them Mukti by bringing Gangaa on earth. he brought Gangaa here only. That is why it is known as Gangaa Saagar Teerth.
