Deviyaan

Back

Deviyaan (Goddesses)      see also       Satee

Devee means goddess or Shakti (power). There are three Devee associated with Brahmaa, Vishnu and Mahesh, Saraswatee, Lakshmee, and Paarvatee Jee respectively.

Otherwise there are nine main Devee:
(1) Lakshmee Jee (Daughter of Samudra, married to Vishnu) Shree, Ramaa etc are some of her other names. Lakshmee Jee is especially worshipped on Deepaavalee day - Kaartik Amaavasyaa day. She is the giver of wealth and prosperity.
(2) Saraswatee Jee (Daughter of Brahmaa Jee) Shaaradaa, Veenevaadinee etc are her other names - She is the Devee of knowledge and is worshipped on Maagh Shukla Panchamee (5th day) or Vasant Panchamee. People start their children's education on this day after Saraswatee Poojan.
(3) Paarvatee Jee (Daughter of Himaalaya and Mainaa, married to Shiv) [Gauree, Him Nandinee, Aparnaa - When she was doing Tap for Shiv Jee and she lived without eating leaves (A=no, and Parn=pattaa, or leaf; so she was called Aparnaa, Meenaakshee are some of her other names] - Paarvatee Jee is famous for bestowing welfare and marital happiness to women. There are several days of the year when married women keep fast for her to get Saubhaagya (marital happiness). Hariyaalee Teej on Shraavan Shukla Teej (3rd day), Karavaa Chauth on Kaartik Krishn Chauth (4th day) are some of them.
(4) Kaalee Devee
(5) Vaishnav Devee - This Devee's temple is in Jammoo Kaashmeer and people go there for pilgrimage
(6) Sheetalaa Maataa
(7) Durgaa Devee
(8) Bhadra Kaalee

These are some temples of Devee in India:--
Chandee Devi - Located on the top of Neel Parvat. A Ropeway Carriage operates here, in Haridwaar - in Uttarakhand State
Mansaa Devi Temple - This temple is on the top of Bilwa Parvat. A Ropeway Carriage operates here, in Haridwaar - Uttarakhand State
Kanyaa Kumaaree - at Cape Comorin, in Tamilnaadu State
Vaishnav Devee - in Jammoo-Kashmeer
Meenaakshee Temple - (Temple of Paarvatee) in Madurai, in Tamilnaadu State

There are two occasions in Indian Lunar calendar when nine Devee are worshipped - one in Chaitra month, from Shukla Pratipadaa (1st day) to Shukla Navamee (9th day); and another time in Aashwin month, from Shukla Pratipadaa (1st day) to Shukla Navamee (9th day). The firs one ends with Raam Navamee and the other one ends with Dashaharaa pr Vijayaa Dashamee.
