2-Signs-Introduction-2

Raashi is called Sign. There are 12 Signs through which the Earth has to pass to make one round of the Sun. These Signs are also nothing but the equal distribution of the sky (a circle) in degrees. As we know that a circle is of 360 deg, a Raashi is of 30 degrees 360 degrees / 12 = 30 degrees.
The same Raashi (30 degrees) is denoted in a chart as a Ghar or House. That is why a chart also has 12 divisions, each depicting one Raashi.

The same sky is divided in 27 Nakshatra (Constellation) also. Thus one Nakshatra is
360 degrees / 27 = 13 degrees 33 minutes

This Nakshatra is also divided in 4 Charan or Pad also

As 12 Raashi   =   27 Nakshatra
1 Nakshatra  =  4 Pad (4 parts)
1 Raashi   =  2 1/4 Nakshatra; OR
1 Raashi   =   9 Pad of 2 1/4 Nakshatra

For the convenience and knowing the exact timing one Raashi can be divided in many Varg or Divisions. In this the whole Raashi (Sign) of 30 deg is divided in several parts. The most common parts are --

2 parts,  (15 degree each - a total of 24 parts); or in
3 parts, Drekkan (10 degrees each - a total of 36 Drekkan); or in
4 parts,  (7.5 degree each - a total of 48 parts); or in
6 parts,  (5 degree each - a total of 72 parts); or in
7 parts,  (4 2/7 degree each - a total of 84 parts); or in
8 parts,  (3 3/4 degree each - a total of 96 parts); or in
9 parts, Navaansh, (3 1/3 degrees each - a total of 108 Navaansh); or in
10 parts, Dashaansh or Drekkan, (3 degrees each - a total of 120 Dashaansh); or in
12 parts, Dweshkaan, (2 1/2 degrees each - a total of 144 Dweshkaan); or even in
16 parts,  (1 7/15 degree each - a total of 192 parts); or in
20 parts,  (1 1/2 degree each - a total of 240 parts); or in
24 Parts,  (1 1/5 degree each - a total of 288 parts); or in
40 parts,  (
45 Parts
60 parts, Shashtyaansh (1/2 degree each - a total of 720 parts) etc.

They are all called Varg (Division)

Navaansh division is most common in Indian Jyotish calculations, which is 3 1/3 degree each. Thus there are a total of 12 Raashi x 9 parts = 108 Navaansh (this is the number of the beads in a Maalaa also). In fact it indicates one Charan of a Nakshatra.

Each Raashi, each Nakshatra, and each Charan of a Nakshatra has his own Lord who rules that period of that particular Raashi, or Nakshatra, or Charan of that Nakshatra respectively. This rulership decides how that period of one's life is going to be - happy, with difficulties, or good for marriage, or with obstacles etc.

Drekkans
A 3rd part of a Raashi is called Drekkan - 3 degrees. Thus there are a total of 36 Drekkans in 12 Raaashi. There are a definitions for the Lords of Drekkans. The 12 Drekkans, from Aries to Cancer, will have the Lords of the 12 Raashi in order. And this arrangement will be repeated for the other two sets too. For example, the Lord of the 1st Drekkan of Leo will be Mars (the Lord of Aries); the Lord of the 2nd Drekkan will be Venus (Lord of Taurus) and so on.
